Best Golf Courses in Salt Lake City Area
March 27, 2014
When one thinks of Utah, especially this time of year, golf might not be the first thing that comes to mind. World-class skiing, Mormon Tabernacles and red rock adventures, sure … but golf?
Well, think again, because did you know that the Beehive State has the highest number of golf courses per capita in the nation? And they are all challenging, well maintained, and the best part, inexpensive to play. So pack your clubs if you’re planning a visit, and while you’re at it, book your stay with us at Pony Express RV Resort!
Meantime, here’s the short list of some the top courses in the Salt Lake City area, brought to you by the Visit Utah Travel Guide:
Johnny Miller's latest contribution to the Utah golf scene is the 27-hole Scottish links-style layout, situated in the Lake Park Corporate Center on Bangerter Highway (4000 West) and 2400 South. The location is terrific, just minutes from the airport and less than 15 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. Tee times can be made up to seven (7) days in advance by calling (801) 957-9000.
Bonus: Play 18 holes, with a cart, at Stonebridge for just $39 (regular rate $57) using this Free Online Coupon that valid seven days a week!
Two of the Utah Travel Guide’s favorite local golf courses are Bonneville and Mountain Dell because they are challenging, fun to play, and boast incredible views in all directions, as well as frequent wildlife spottings.
Twice voted as one of the Top 5 golf courses in Utah by Golf Magazine, this links-style course near the Salt Lake International Airport is a sprawling, 7,185-yard layout with distinctive Scottish flavor with rolling mounds, wildflowers, and plenty of bunkers. A true test for even the most intrepid golfer, and worth every bit of the $48 greens fees (18 holes plus a cart).
Located in Midway, UT, and under an hour’s drive from downtown SLC, the well-known Mountain and Lake courses at Wasatch Mountain State Park are consistently ranked among the most popular, affordable and scenic in Utah. Nationally, Golf Digest rated Wasatch Mountain as one of Utah's Best Places to Play, giving the facility 4.5 out of 5 stars. And, at an elevation of 6,000 feet, golfers enjoy cooler temperatures during summer months, as well as, surprisingly, great early spring and late fall play.
Another incredible course! Located in Layton, UT, roughly a 30-minute drive north of SLC, Valley View was designed using the natural terrain of the Wasatch Mountain foothills, creating several elevation changes punctuated with spectacular views.
About 60 minutes north of Salt Lake, overlooking the breathtaking Ogden Valley, lies Wolf Creek, arguably Utah’s most scenic golf courses. Famed for its awe—inspiring views, Wolf Creek’s unique design meanders across foothills, through groves of oak trees, across water features, and alongside native grass lands, creating one the most beautiful and most challenging golf courses in the Western states.
It’s also the only Audubon Society certified golf course in Utah, providing sanctuary for wild birds local wildlife, and northern Utah flora and fauna.
No doubt by now you’re eyeing your sticks and eagerly plotting that trip to Salt Lake City, so we’ll leave you with one more helpful tip: SLC has a tee-time reservation service that allows you to book a tee time at any golf course operated by the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
