Perseid Meteor Shower 2017

August 07, 2017

You’ve probably heard about the Perseid Meteor Shower occurring throughout the months of July and August. Sources are weighing in and some are saying that this could be the most impressive display of shooting stars to occur in years! If you are looking for a place to soak in the stars, you may want to consider Borrego Springs, CA. As one of the few dark sky communities in the United States, you can view the spectacle in an environment known for its lack of light pollution and unparalleled stargazing!

From July 17th to August 24th, the Perseids can be seen racing across the night sky but the peak will occur on August 12th around midnight. Historically, anywhere from 60-200 meteors have been seen shooting across the sky every hour. Experts at NASA believe that this year will produce around 150 per hour, making for a spectacular sight!

Borrego Springs, CA is also a great place to catch the upcoming solar eclipse! On the morning of August 21st around 10:24 am, the eclipse will reach its max in the area. If you time a trip just right, you can catch the eclipse and the tail end of the Perseid Meteor Shower!

Our Palm Canyon Hotel & RV Resort and Borrego Valley Inn have both been named Night Sky Friendly Businesses as each adheres to lighting standards that help preserve the area’s environment and night sky. With three mountain ranges blocking out all neighboring city lights, Borrego Springs is truly a stargazing experience like no other.

Wherever you end up for this month’s stellar celebrations, the team at Highway West Vacations wishes you happy gazing!
