About the Solvang Prelude Bike Ride
One of the premier biking events each autumn is the Solvang Prelude Bike Ride. This year’s 26th annual event will be staged Nov. 2.
The ride starts and finishes in Solvang’s River View Park and Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground is one of the recommended housing sites, annually drawing upward of 100 riders.
This year’s event features Family rides of 10 or 25 miles as well as longer rides of 50 miles or a Metric Century. The ride also includes a special "Single Gear" Division and awards for those who ride any of the four routes on a single gear bike.
There will be a Cycling Festival, catered food trucks, kids entertainment, live DJ and more. Boy Scout Troops looking to earn a cycling merit badge are invited to participate.
Celebrity Rider John Howard
Three-time Olympian John Howard will be the Celebrity Guest Rider for this year's Solvang Prelude Bike Ride. A competitor at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, Howard won the gold medal in the 1971 Pan American road cycling race. In 1982, Howard was one of four competitors in the inaugural Race Across America, eventually finishing second.
Cyclists may register on Friday evening from 6-10 p.m. on Nov. 1 or Saturday morning Nov. 2 at the Cycling Festival registration Tent from 6:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. The Day-of-Event Registration Fee will be $50, $30 and $80, respectively, for adults, kids under age 14 and tandem teams.
The ride sponsor is S.C.O.R., which stands for Specialized Coronary Outpatient Rehabilitation, an incorporated, non-profit recreational bicycling club, which encourages bicycling as form of rehabilitative therapy after heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, angioplasty and other forms of heart disease.
